Just As Bibi Visits Obama – Crisis Continues?
23/03/2010
Jerusalem Municipality Approves Building Permit for 20 Residential Units at East Jerusalem's Shepard Hotel, Sheikh Jarrah
Only a week has passed since the crisis over East Jerusalem construction was ignited when US Vice President Biden visited Israel, and now it has happened again!
Yesterday, at the time of Bibi's visit in Washington with Obama, the Jerusalem Municipality issued a final building permit for 20 new housing units at the Shepard Hotel Site, Sheikh Jarrah. Meaning that the settlers can start construction any time that they wish, even if it would be inconvenient politically, the Israeli government.

Already back in July 2009 the Committee's decision to start the process of building permits at Shepherd Hotel compound caused a  controversy. The approval process, issuing the permits etc takes several months.

Peace Now: The Mayor of the Jerusalem Municipality has control over an independent policy that can be devastating in terms of the political process. If Netanyahu wants to conduct foreign policy and lead the peace process, he must ensure that the municipality does not surprise him, not with bureaucratic or political decisions contrary to his policy commitments as the head of the government.
