Construction in the Settlements August 2004
Approx 50 settlements has new construction taking place pass their existing boundaries and… construction continues in Gush Katif
Settlement Watch Team 27/09/2004
Since April 2004, Peace Now has commissioned flights over all the settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. These flights collate accurate information, through aerial photography, on the rate and type of construction taking place in all of the settlements. Every 2 months comparisons are made with the previous results in order to receive a complete picture of such growth. Herewith are the results of this comparison made between the beginning of June 2004 and the end of July 2004.

Main Findings
• Throughout the West Bank and the Gaza Strip there exist around 474 sites where construction of buildings and infrastructure is taking place.
• At around 50 of these sites expansion or new construction deviates from the existing boundaries of the settlement (See below list).
• Today there is around 1500 housing blocs under construction throughout the occupied territories. In addition there is continual ground preparation taking place for thousands of additional houses.
• Around 50 new caravans were placed within settlements in this period
• Expansion continues in the areas surrounding settlements in the Gaza Strip

Construction and Expansion in the Gaza Strip and the North West Bank Settlements:
In June 2004 Peace Now published a report regarding the significant and continual growth in the Gaza Strip settlements. This phenomenon has continued throughout June and July 2004. A similar pattern is also emerging in the northern West Bank settlements.

All this can be gauged from the following facts:
1. Beginnings of ground work for new greenhouses or paths (Bnei Atzmon, Gan Or, Katif, Ganei Tal, Kadim)
2. New Construction (Neve Dekalim)
3. New Caravans (Sa-Nur, Kfar Darom)
4. Occupation of houses that since their construction have stood empty (Gadid, Bedolah)

According to the aerial surveys houses in settlements once stood empty are now being occupied (around 370 houses) seemingly in response the Disengagement Plan.
