Survey Conducted Amongst Israeli Public on Frequency of visits to West Bank Settlements – July 2008
According to survey results, commissioned by Peace Now and implemented by Ma'agar Mohot company, 73% of Israelis admit that in the past few years they have never been to the West Bank. The minority that has crossed the green Line have done so far as part of their army service or a one-off family event.
In one of the questions: “How many times in the past years have you visited the settlements in the West Bank?” - 73% replied “never”, 22% replied “once or twice”.
The main reason that the 73% had given for not visiting the settlements was disinterest, fear of terror attacks, and political reasons.
Regarding the outposts, 79% of the general public has never visited outposts in their life; the minority that had visited was mainly from the younger sections of the population.
One of the most difficult problems we face today is explaining the real picture to the Israeli public of what is happening in the settlements and outposts, even more so it often takes a visit to the settlements themselves to show the damage they are causing to our state and the political process.
For this reason Peace Now in the month of July is organizing a series of tours to the West Bank, in particular aiming to attract people who have never visited the West Bank before.
