Peace Now Positions
In favor of the Geneva Initiative and in Favor of Settlement Evacuation - 08/04/2004
Peace Now supports the Geneva Initiative, fully and without reservations. Nevertheless, the evacuation of any area of the occupied territories is a positive step in the right direction, and it must be accomplished, in the absence of a final agreement, in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.
This position was published as a Letter to the Editor in "Haaretz" in response to "Peace Now starts a new campaign - supporting unilateral withdrawal from the territories" by Lily Galili ("Haaretz" 01/04/2004).

Peace Now supports the Geneva Initiative, fully and without reservations. Our movement considers that reaching an agreement with the Palestinian people through their authorized representatives is the right, essential and only way to obtain a lasting peace between the two peoples and the only chance to attain peace and security.

The aim of the new campaign isn't to support unilateral steps versus negotiations. Peace Now has always opposed the existence of the settlements and considered its establishment as a unilateral act of violence. Therefore there is nothing new in our call for the evacuation of the settlements. The evacuation of any area of the occupied territories is a positive step in the right direction, and it must be accomplished, in the absence of a final agreement, in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.

We believe that there is no threat of confrontation within the peace camp as a result of our position, and our steps will continue to be coordinated with all our partners, including the Geneva group, as has been up to now.
